"I’m very optimistic that things have changed so much in the last two to three years, but gay rights took a long long time to happen. I think transgender rights are going to take a long time also," says says Elaine Walquist of Portland, 64. “My hope is by educating people, the more people become familiar with the topic and with people like me, hopefully society will become a better place.”
