Storytelling: History in the Making: Obamanomenom

On November 4, 2008, tens of thousands of Senator Barack Obama supporters converged at Grant Park in Chicago, hoping to bear witness to history and hear that their candidate has clinched the 2008 Presidential election. 

  • Tickets to the event were limited, but that didn't stop people from coming to participate in the events. In the street outside the venue Obama supporters were already celebrating, and encouraging people to participate in the {quote}Obamanomenon.{quote}
  • In the ticketed area, flags were waived as the crowd stared up at the projection screens, awaiting news that Senator Obama had won the election.
  • Chinyere Brown of Chicago clutches her Obama doll and flag as she watches the results and waits in the unticketed area at Grant Park.
  • Obama's win seems imminent, and the crowd begins celebrating--Jessica Bealer of Chicago (left), Dominique Johnson of Chicago (center left),  Shivani Parikh of Chicago (center right), and Mikki Yuen of Chicago (right), believe that their candidate has clinched the election.
  • Finally, the magic number has been reached and CNN projects Obama as the next president as the numbers begin to pour in. Senator McCain looked solemn as he faced the fact that he had lost the election.
  • Just after 10 p.m. history is made; Senator Obama is the new President-elect. {quote}My emotions took over. I thought I was going to faint{quote} says Mechelene Head as she clutches her chest (right) upon hearing the news. {quote}It feels so good,{quote} she says, comforted by Toni Gavin (left).
  • A man runs through the grounds holding a {quote}We have overcome{quote} sign just after the announcement of Obama's victory.
  • At last President-elect Barack Obama takes the stage at Grant Park, and sets the tone for the next four years.
  • A couple holds one another as they listen to President-elect Obama's address.
  • Obama supporters could be found on nearly every corner, celebrating his victory. Mohamed Newlove of Los Angeles volunteered for the campaign, trailing Obama across the country and was thrilled to celebrate the victory in Chicago.
  • {quote}I play for Mr. Obama,{quote} says Max Lulich, playing patriotic themed songs on a street corner in Hyde Park, not far from where President-elect Obama resides. {quote}You never know, maybe I could be president one day,{quote} he says.Max played in a costume he made for a class project and his set list included Yankee Doodle Dandy, the Marine's Hymn, America the Beautiful, Star Spangled Banner, and Stars and Stripes forever.
